can't be Protopterus aethiopicus, must be annectens.

on what info are you basing this?

it's very likely an annectens IMO, but i don't see how you are ruling out aethiopicus without any reasoning whatsoever--

PS-- let's stay focused on the ID of the fish everyone as that is the main question here. to be honest, African lungs don't need a TON of space compared to fishes of similar size...they are inactive much of the time, so as long as there is good filtration and water changes on the tank, the fish will be fine in an aquarium where it can at least stretch out length-wise.--

I'd bet annectens as well, just because - especially back then - those were the most commonly imported species.

I grew an annectens to about 2' in a 75g...and then moved it to a 100g Rubbermaid stock tank. They're not super-active fish so he seemed healthy and happy in both of these set-ups.

Keeping ANY tank clean can be a challenge with lungs, as they are really messy eaters. I kept just a little gravel in his tank / tub to make seeing and siphoning waste easier... For filtration, I used a pump with a pre-filter to stir up and catch debris...as well as an (air-driven) sponge filter. Mine hung out in big PVC fittings...

i would agree that annectens are the most commonly imported African lungfish species, but i'm not fully willing to accept the fact that this is the primary reason to ID this fish. a few more pics would help greatly. at 30 years a small annectens or aethiopicus aethiopicus could look quite similarly.

that being said, i agree with the above poster's care technique...they are not super active, so a 100g tank (stock or otherwise) could work just fine in many cases--

in my vision it is a Protopterus annectens. i've got the same fish for about 5 years now. i keep it in a 3500 liter tank so room enough and it really needs space. it completely demolished the first tank setup. now it lives with 4 bgk 3 cichla 4 temporalis and there are a few channa's underway.
De max length of the protopterus is +- 2 metres and the average age is 24. my fish (called "Lars") is now 1.04 meter weight 4.2 kilo and has the thickness of a 2 liter cola bottle.

for pics of aquarium look at www.showjeaquarium.nl and look for DNovaNL. enjoy
