  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
well it the size of the WC all depends on the stocking and feeding and all the other stuff

i dont recomend ever changing more then 25% of the water at a time
i do 20% changes 3 to 4 times a week
more if there are anything that even might be a problem
changing water more then 25% at a time can be dangerous though

bro i do 70% every week

70% twice a week in the summer

in your case, a big water change will shock your fish, since you dont do them that fequently or in large quantity.

since the water parameters of the water you are changing with are very different from your tank water.

Ok well alot of you want to know what i will be housing in it.

there will be:

bottom dwellers:
2 P. Senegalus
1 P. Ornatipinnis
1 P. Palmas
and if i ever find one a P. Endli Congicus

middle and top:
3 oscars
2 Channa Marulioides
1 Flagtail Characin
1 African Brown Knife
1 ropefish

it will be sandy bottom, with vegitation rocks and bogwood

My sump is not made yet so any suggestions on the size are welcome. i have made the overflows and they are large enough to take a large sum of water with them.

oh no hes mixing South america with Africa:nilly: :banhim:

naw just kidding that endli would put you way over board.

Adequate filtration is key, as is proper water changes. If you overstock, you need to do a higher percentage of water with each change. Otherwise get a drip system. There are no shortcuts to keeping a healthy tank.

:iagree: :werd: :iagree: :werd:

You hit the nail on the head

for your sump ive been told the ideal size is 10% of your tank size. I myself like to over filter so to me it sounds great ,but with the answers on this thread obviously everyone has different opinions.

But isnt that what we are here for to hear different opinions and maybe gain some knowledge.

And by the way I have a 300 in garage I am planning out how to set up so if you got pics of your set up and how you did sharing is caring

300 plus gallons with those fish?? I know its not my business, but since you haven't got the tank runnin yet....I would consider a complete SA setup or African but I wouldn't mix if possible. At least replace the Oscars with something else. Just a suggestion.

Oh and water changes sweat, tears, blood, and other tank maintenance should be factored into cost before you buy any tank and its inhabitants. The goal should be the needs of the fish and their health. Water changes are a necessary part of doing that, regardless of tank size.

I'm going to second the drip system thought. I havent done a water change on my 265 in over 6 months:D

Drip systems actually use less water, and they're easier on the fish. Rather than lowering levels, letting them raise, lowering them, letting them raise, ect. you can maintain them at a low level which uses less water IME.

Hey man
I have some pretty sick ideas for my setup actually... its taken alt of video watching but the overal look will prolly be sumthin like this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=avofySJNsP8

i quite like the darkness, i kinda enjoy a tank were the fish can hide and be n their natural state so i actually have to look for them.

I als have a what i think is a briliiant idea for the water coming from the sump.
I was thinking of putting a fat tube of pvc around the back bottom part of the tank, ike behind the rocks and would and stuff. and have the pump from the sump pump the water through that so that the circulation in the tank goes from bottom to top, cuz i mean most of the poop and stuff ends up behind those rocks and is annoying to gravel vac out. this way itll all get pushed forward where its easy to get to. i was thinking of also putting some slts in the pvc piping along the bac so that the water does just come out the ends but also in the middle of the tank. what do u think?
also to add to the nice dark effect im goin for i found some lava sand, like black sand... i think thatl have a cool effect.

i dont kno what im doing right, or wrong for the matter. but i haven't done a wc on my 400gal since i set it up. been almost 2 months with no water changes. pretty heavily stocked and decent filtration. i just dont over feed i guess. i only feed twice a week.

What do your ammonia/nitrite/nitrate test at? (keep in mind that's not the only thing to worry about)
