320G stocking - can I add Oscar + Jack Dempsey

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks, talked to my gf and we decided to relocate the tiger pleco to another tank. The snowball I've had for years and it's one of the only pleco's I've held that I actually see daily.

Stocking:
1 x Chocolate cichlid
1 x Oscar
4 x Severum
1 x Snowball

Still have to decide about the silver dollars or adding something else. I'm not sure what to be honest but 7 fish doesn't sound like a lot either in this tank even if they get pretty big. Could reduce the severum to three as well and maybe open up a spot then for another cichlid. Hard to decide but doesnt have to be today and the basis is here.
Going to go for this but 3 severums (rottkeil) and 3-4 SDs. Thought about going for another cichlid but can't figure out which one and it is too much of a risk.

I know it is touted that GTs and other Andinoacara make good tank mates for oscars, but the reality is GTs and Andnidinoacara come from west of the Andes, and would never come across an oscar, and where water is often cooler, and more alkaline, and mineral rich, while water east of the Andes where oscars come from, is softer, much less alkaline, and mineral poor.
East of the Andes cichlids live in areas with large communities of varied cichlid species, so have evolved in a species rich communities, but west of the Andes where GTs and Andinoacara come from, they are often the only cichlid species in their habitat, or share that habitat with only 1 or 2 other species, so are less apt to put up with varied cichlid species in the confines of an aquarium, and are often quite a bit more territorial against any other cichlid interloper.
Just because oscars and GTs are largish S American cichlids, doesn't mean they will make good tank mates or coexist calmly.
I believe sites that recommend the 2 together, have been lax in doing their homework.

I would say the same about sites that recommend keeping Geophagus from the tropical waters of the Amazon, long term, with Gymnogeophagus from the temperate waters, and climate in Uruguay.
