35 gal. custom stocking advice. [short tank]

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Does this tank have a top or is it enclosed?

wtf...why is it every time i read a thread on here that is less then 55 gallons about stocking advice, everyone always says "neons"..... there are several different species of shell dweller cichlids and dwarf cichlids that would be perfect for that tank.

dont get me wrong, i think neons are a great addition to a community tank, but shouldnbt be the first thing out of everyones mouth here

:shakehead I didn't suggest anything so STFU about EVERYONE suggesting neons. Matter of fact the same (and only) person who suggested neons also suggested a dwarf cichlid first, or can't you read? :duh:

I'll second the shell dwellers suggestion. That tank would look great with a couple small rock piles in the corners and a big open bed of snail shells

I can make a top if I need to, and thanks for the suggestions everyone, these are all great suggestions so far!

Oh and what kind of sand would shell dwellers need? And what kind of shells? Where would I order the shells from? And would like, 4 kuhli loaches be able to live in one of the rock piles? I already have them and it really dosn't matter if they do or stay in the tank they're already in. Thanks.

Really any sand would work, but there are a few types that buffer the pH for African cichlids. I have been collecting turbo snail (SW algae eating snail) shells for my shellies I'm getting. I wouldn't do kuhlis with the cichlids. 1, they may get picked on and 2, they won't appreciate the high buffered pH the shellies prefer.

I actually thought neons would have been nice for this tank - only because I was thinking of a fully planted tank - the low depth would make good for growth with less lighting efforts. He also mentioned viewing from above which would give neons a bright color flash as they swim. Not everyone who says neons does it for the same reasons....

A tank for killifish would be nice too, very colorful and small enough to have a group of them, a planted tank would be nice for them too.

Beyond that, if you went brackish you could do some small puffers. You mentioned predatory fish..

If your thinking africans, there are quite a few smaller species that are colorful too..
You can buy shell mixes at a lfs, even Petsmart has some selection usually. A good saltwater shop may have a better selection too.

Alright now I'm thinking some Clown Killies and some dwarf cherry reds [or yellow], would these work and again would the Kuhli's fit in? It's either that or just a TON of kuhli's or just shrimp or shell dwellers or just a single sengal bichir which I'm not sure would actually work on second thought...

They get to big..
