350 Gallon Tank and Filtration

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Group think? Because the majority of people on here have big tanks, like OP, and the majority find sumps easier and better for providing proper care for their fish makes it group think? No.

Don't use your LFS example of an overstocked 150g including an RTC and not seeing any signs of ammonia stress. Are we to assume your eyes are capable of performing a proper test of that tank's water parameters, so it must be good? No.

Coherent thought process to prove your points with random words surrounded by asterisks and poor grammar? No.

OP - use the right course of filtration that you feel will provide the best living conditions for your pets. Many on here have lots of experience with large tanks and what they think offers the best filtration for tank size versus cost and maintenance. Price out how much AC110s and canister filters are against sumps. My sump is comprised of 2 rubbermaid totes and a garbage can. Super cheap, super effective and I know that through proper water testing and growth/health of my fish. Feel free to PM me to see pictures of my 360g sump setup and I can also walk you through my setup and answer any questions for you.
your the one that attacked me , not the other way around .. i got your poor grammar hanging........ btw.. your a freakin troll.. i agree with your overall thoughts on the op using proper filtration.. you have demonstrated a one sided view without accepting the other side as a viable option , and attacked me for having the opposite thought as to yours , i thought this was supposed to be discussion of ideas , not a fight .. put me on your ignore list or whatever you need to do .. because this pr obably will end up badly , the difference here? i don't give half of 2 poops about mfk...you guys are a freakin cult ..and yes groupthink .. this "place " is a waste of time ,, best thing i ever did in fishkeeping was to forget this place existed for a long time

I liked sump too untill the heater in my sump melted thru my sump pissed water everywhere them almost caught fire ?
Tanks will always need to be taken care of so cleaning a canister vs sump is nothing
I look for the safest most likely not to fail and go wrong filter
If My fx6 fails
Fluval maybe liable or warranty the pump/product
Your home set up fails your liable For it all

I will still say yes a sump is better filtration but I don’t feel it’s the safest method Not to mention sumps are loud

ps I don’t give 2 cents about my grammar you should be smart enough to know where the periods/caps go I’m just too busy to care you’ll get my point
the guy is just trolling .. he has no point to make , he just picked a fight with a "new guy" because he(probably) thinks recent time on mfk makes him more legit, or better(at fishkeeping, he's obviously wrong) than me .. no worries

I just pass on my experience
And I’ve experienced a sump going very bad and almost burning down my house
I thank my cat who woke me to a smoke filled room all cause from my heater melted thru the sump and was burning the wood on the stand

Not in the least. Just refuting your points.

edit:*" write" not "right" the word sump" in the above post *.. i now remember how stupid some of the policies are here on mfk.. time limits on edits.. ya, kind of a big thing if your trying to make a coherent point to those with a thought process

The policies are there (subject to change if needed) to help keep the forum hobby oriented.

How is that the fault of the sump? Sounds like the heater failed or you failed to take proper precautions. Sumps increase water volume and usually are easier to clean. More so then a canister filter. Ac110s are a personal favorite of mine since they are easy to mod and clean.

I’m not blaming the sump but clearly if things go went wrong as in my negligence / neglect or heater failure the results can be worse with a sump vs canister or hob
My opinion

Heater failure is bad no matter where the heater is. If it was a faulty heater against the glass of your tank it could have cracked the tank. Or cooked the fish. I fail to see how it failing in your sump is worse then if you had a hob or canister. It was a bad situation either way.
In my sump I remove the socks and stick them in a bucket of bleach water to await the monthly washing of the sump socks. About 1 time a year the sump gets emptied and all the biomedia rinsed with tank water and replaced. Its much easier then any canister I've ever cleaned, less water mess too.

IMO wayyy more dangerous In sump

if the heatered failed in tank ya fish die or maybe cracks tanks but that’s doubtful to break glass
But in my case the failed heater in sump almost killed me
Burned the acrylic and burned the wood on the stand I woke up in a smoke filled room
It was a horrible plastic smell. I thank my cat to waking me honestly
don’t think that would of happened had heater failed in the Tank
fish can me replaced I cannot be
This is a big reason why I won’t keep a heater in a sump
