I have a 30g tank with 1 5inch male convict and he is very interesting. I also have with him a 4 inch featherfin catfish and 10 giant danios. The tank is really great looking. something to consider. I would go with 1 medium sized cichlid like a convict or a firemouth, and then just setup a community around him.

ya convicts suck if you ask me. but blue rams are hard to keep. ive gone thru like 6 already. they last me about 2 months o so and then they start breathing really fast for a few days an die.can anyody help me with that.
apistos are small and very colorful, i think better option than rams, i dont know about where u live but in my area convict babies are hard to get rid of sometimes even if u give them away
Well my old LFS (before it got shut down) rarely had convicts, i remember him having 2-3 batches in sucession but generally speaking there was just a handfull of JD's and Redbellies that had grown too big for somebody elses tank.
I have started visiting a few stores now within a 10mile or so radius of my house and have found a better selection -tho i still believe theres not many convicts in there..could be over looking them ofcourse as i generally tend to look for plecs.
I thought firemouths grew too big; just looked em up..just 1-2 inches difference in max size but i think that extra inch or two would be the deciding factor, just a little big i feel. Would rather have two of the same kind, could go with two females (of whichever cic.species i decide on) untill i have a longer tank and more space to host the ocassional spawn.
Blue rams tend to have a weaker immune system i believe? To do with their selective inbreeding. **Might have it mixed up with another form of cic, done a lot of reading last few days lol**
Salvini does look nice, Does anybody have experiences with them to share? : )
Though i am pretty sure im against having a single convict in teh tank on its own - because im one of those people that feel the fish is lonely.... lol

Your right, its a very attractive fish. Though i have two bristlenose plecos already who're very shy and i'd rather not have the swimming fish be shy too..

Male salvini's can get 8" a lil' big for 30+ gal IMO, maybe Hondorun Red Point pair.
A few posts ago you mentioned a slate bottom or substrate such as sand. I'd highly recommend either sand or clay/gravel mix. The substrate helps hold the PH - to much exposed waste can lower or swing your PH value which is highly unhealthy for fish, most especially for those who do not do weekly water changes and cleanings. Better safe than sorry.

I will deffinetly go sand then, and make a mixture of caves available as it seems to be the agreed on setup. Should i use Marine sand? I read somewhere that it is recommended for SA cics?
