36 gallon tanganyika stock

Do you mean like a non-cichlid dither schooling fish? Perhaps a school of congo tetras might work? I have never kept them with cichlids other than discus, & they're river tetras so I am not sur eof their water parameter requirements, but they're hardy & would get as nearly large as the attenuatus & they're very fast. They will also inhabit the mid-upper water column leaving the attenuatus to rule & reign the lower water column. Worth looking in to perhaps 🤷‍♂️

The tank is too small for Congo tetras.
I also would not have bought an atenuatus. They grow up to 15 cm and can be pretty tough with other fish. Nothing you want in the confined space of 36 g.

I read they grow to 6” in the wild, but usually only 4” in captivity 🤷🏼‍♂️
In post #10 the OP mentioned perhaps keeping the attenuatus as an individual fish & exploring options for dithers, not other cichlids, that might work with it 🤷🏼‍♂️

Is there a chance it can work solo? If not I will most likely upgrade to something bigger like a 55 gallon.

I will probably just go with a bigger tank in that case. Thanks for the info.
What about a colony of neolamp multifasciatus or similis? They rear their young in multigenerational harems. Very cool to what them establish themselves in this manner. You could start with 8-10 fish and watch the community grow!

I'm probably going to end up doing a trio of black calvus and move them into a bigger 55.
