what monsters could i keep in a tank thats 30" long 12" wide and 22" tall? i wouldnt mind only one or two fish (by two i mean one botom dweller and one all around swimer). more fish wold be fine. just looking for suggestions.

Check out dookie's post in todays buy and sell in the thread H.ODOE, a 10" african pike for $39 that he is selling because it is getting to aggressive, that is almost max size and they are not real active so it would barely work.

i cant find that thread

I know people who have had success with one oscar... tank is a lil small but it does work I would not suggest due to the amount of water changes you would need to do... and really could not keep a pleco either...

Actually H. odoe gets to around two feet, and I know of people with 18" specimens. I'd go for a school of Steatogenys elegans, the centipede knife... or a school of exodons.

I went by the old Axelrod's mini atlas which lists them at 30cm and that I have never seen one myself that was bigger than a foot. After reading your post I double checked with fishbase and they list them at 70cm which is more inline with what you have seen.
I hate old info, this book is to handy to toss but it also lists black aros as only getting to 18"s.

Get your self a pair of convict cichlids and a minimum robust decor if you can get a male and a female make your hobby pay for it's self by letting them breed.

Here's a male and a female convict so you know what your looking for.

You could have some sort of bottom dweller like a pleco or a couple of cory catfish but if you wanted to breed the fry would more than likly be eaten by them.

i knew that some1 was going to say convicts. are there any other speicies of cichlids that can be kept and bred in my tank.
