375g in wall build

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've made some progress, but I'm at work now and I can't post pics.

I completed the wet/dry for both the 120g and the 375. I'll post some pictures this evening. Very soon I'm just going to make the plunge and cut a hole in my wall so i can't back out. I've been discussing with my wife whether to make a very ornate wood front or plain and flush with the wall. I think I've chosen to go plain for now. I can always go back and make a decorative and elaborate wood front later.

Awesome tank! Plain looks good. Just trim it out and paint to your liking. I love anything in- wall. Tanks, AV equipment etc. Any concerns with humidity?

I ended up setting aside the drip tray, and making a drip plate. However, I got it all set up and decided that I didn't like it. So I decided to scrap the drip plate that I made and decided to go back to the drip tray method. I think I just prefer it. Guess I'll make those tomorrow. Here's what the drip plate pieces look like. I think I'll just make them the bottom pieces in my drip trays. All I'll have to do is make some side pieces and weld on them together.

This weekend I'm going to reroute the electrical to accommodate the tank going in. I'll grab some 2x4s and 2x6s and frame up the stand. Pocket screws, plywood, glue, and a nail gun.... I'm wondering how many beers it'll take to get it made?

Anyway, here are some pics of the drip plates, the room that the tank will be in, the cabinets and countertop I put in (sink still has to go in), and the space where the 29g quarantine tank will sit. You'll notice my sump is in here. I plan to plumb into the plumbing in the house, not into the sump. However, I'm contemplating a safety overflow or something for a just in case. But I guess if my house drain backed up, I'd have a lot bigger problems than whether or not I was overusing the sump pump :D

Enjoy

So, I think I'm due to update this. I started owrking on the stand by building a base and the 2x6 frame that will be the top portion of the stand. I'll put some pics up this evening.

Because no floor is really level, I plan to build the verticals for the stand in place and level them accordingly. In other words, I have the base built that sits on the concrete. I'll cut the verticals this evening. Then prop up the other side of the 2x6 portion and the other verticals will be cut as level, not as a premeasured height.

Anxiously awaiting those pictures!

That is how I am building my stand as well! A bit of a pain and lots of measuring but I hope it will be well worth it in the end!

Keep up the good stuff!

Nice progress, subscribed.

So, here is where I sit with this now:
I built the top part of the stand, the base of the stand, but now I have to do some electrical rerouting before I can cut into the studs in the wall, and move the stand top onto them. I got out my laser level to get a good line on the studs, so I feel I'll be pretty straight all the way across. I'll shim as necessary, but I expect to be pretty level overall by making each part of the stand level.

I'm also contemplating removing the whole section of wall in that area, and just building the stand. This would save me some effort, but I would also be missing a wall in my basement for a while. I'm not sure how my wife would like that, but we'll see. I still have to consider all of the pros and cons.

Note, the studs will not be used as primary support. I am using them since they're there, but the stand would be 100% without them.
