nope. in fact, i'd even venture to say the largest benefit of filters is not the filtration, but the movement of water it creates.

The advantage of the Bio wheel is that it exposes the Beneficial bacteria (BB)to air, which increases the oxygen it needs making for stonger BB colonies. It does work well but it is not the greatest thing to happen to fish keeping by far.
I like the bio wheel filters, they work well on smaller(75g and under) tanks that are not heavily stocked. Biggest drawback with them seems to be their lack of mechanical filtration.
