The main reason I suggested a small African over a small CA/SA, is Eastern Washington's water is hard already and perfect for breeding Africans right out of the tap..The gangsters of the Jewel world are the 5 spot generals 
The ones a the pet stores are just lil guys and would go great in the tank you have Twhittle. The 5 spot general jewel is arguably the baddest cichlid on the planet. I have heard stories of adults killing fish WAY bigger than them. But enough about Africans in the CA forum. Good luck with whatever you choose..
