Decided to build my first pond today and got started this afternoon

It measures 2.6m x 1.5m x 1m (might go deeper haven't decided yet

not quite sure on stock yet a couple of koi will definatley be going in there though :), any other suggestions welcome.

Does it cost alot to heat a pond?? as this would change everything inlcuding stock

I will be constructing a brickwall above ground and it will go below ground also, so far it works out at 3900litres but i do want to go deeper.

Pond pumps and filter suggestions wouuld be handy as this is all new to me at the moment and any other ideas you guys have :)

I will also be constructing a timber pagoda type thing above the pond which i will have vines and such on and also a few downlights for the night, again lighting suggestions would come in handy

I have seen tiled ponds also and was wondering how much this costs and whats involved (i will be doing the tiling), also maintenance of the pond if tiled, would it be hard to keep clean if they were white tiles?? is it worth doing??

Heres a few pictures updates to come soon

thanks for reading

As far as filtration make a DIY filter there are a lot of threads about them here in the pond sections and a lot of good ones. As for the heater I have no clue about but I know if you have koi in there they will not need the heater. Besides that its looking good thats roughly 1,000 gallons US so you should be able to hold a few koi no problem. Best of luck

Hmm ill have a look and see :)

yh if i heat it i wont put koi in it

Looks good keep up the good work. Now over in London does it get cold enough to freeze the pond? I know that at my house in Ireland it snows sometimes but freezing isnt a problem. If you do get ice and stuff just remember to make your plumbing and a part of the pond around 1.25meters deep so its below that freezing point in the ground.

yeah it does get pretty cold in the winter!! i see i will probably have the filter box insulated aswell.

I'd simply go fishing for stock when its up and running, some ponds don't use a filter but need aeration and agitation for obvious reasons, as long as its planted you should be good imo, you could construct a water fall, and at the top before it falls just have bio balls or something. That way its natural and cheap, BTW I like the digging, I see you took some anger out on that fence wall lol, my job is basically digging, good exercise!

With those fish you're going to want to go with a lot of filtration something like this should work. http://www.koiphen.com/forums/showthread.php?36550-55-Gal-Drum-Sand-and-gravel-filter-DIY . If you dont like that look into some other ones in the DIY section. With that fish load you will need it. I've kept carp and koi before and theyre messy fish and poop machines so you'll want that extra filtratrion. If you don't filter it the ammonia will spike and kill those fish. Hope this helps

thats not a bad idea i was thinking to put some sort of water fall in the corner constructed out of large rocks cemented together, yeah i am a pretty good digger :) its part of my job aswell sometimes some people i can imagine hate it but i find it stress releaving,

i did want to go with some hge homemade filter as ive seen them made with dustbins, i want crystal clear water or as close to that as i can get is this possible??

i take it you have a pond then??

thanks mate
