I'm forever toying with the idea of a 3D bg but to lazy to follow through so far. Any how the idea is in my head again and I'm curious as to how they hold up over the years. I'm assuming they maintain their structural integrity but how about their finish? Do they fade over time?

Can only speak for designs by nature... I have had a couple backgrounds set up for almost two years now. Zero signs of wear.

They aren't painted like you might think... The "paint" is actually real rock. So there's no fading.

Thanks. Now to find a slimline I like enough to buy. I don't want to loose a lot of real estate in my 125 and definitely dont want to break the tank down to install a background.

I agree with aclockwork, I've had the malawi rock background in one of my tanks for over 5 years with no sign of wear.
If I bought another one though, I would go with a slimline version, the one I have does take up a bit of real estate. It has also separated from the back and bottom of the tank allowing fish to disappear behind it when they want to.
This is not the fault of the background, just my sloppy installation.

Finally pulled the trigger and ordered the Designs by Nature bj28wa. It took some googling to find a pic of one in a tank to convince me but the intank shot was 10x better than the product pic on dbn, that and its the thinnest one(dont have to rework my spray bar) and tall enough for a 125(most are only 21.5", needed 22").

I have had this one for about 2 years now in 2 different tanks, holding up great!

what size tank is that and how thick is the background? It does an amazing job of creating the illusion of death.

Sorry for the delay! The background sticks out on the far right about 10" or so, I had an idea in my head of a look I wanted and called Designs by Nature to see if they could do it, they said no problem. It's the Pombo rocks version basically cut diagonally, what you see is the left btm half of the background flipped around so it's on the top. What you don't see is the 50sqft spa filter behind it hooked up to a 110v 24 hr circulating pump. Works great for mechanical filtration and the filter I can change or clean anytime. Anyway thanks for the thoughts!!
