Drill holes. Depends on application how exactly you want to do it. The panels are actually a good idea with your application and they're cheap.

I've got a designsbynature slimline in my cichlid tank. Used a hole saw and drilled three 2" holes, silicones some black plastic mesh to the backside to keep fish out. Works great.

Yes Designs by Nature is a good start, Pangea is another.

Mine is partial from DBN I can remove it if I want, and the fish can swim behind it.
