I'm trying to get my 2,5'' demspey to accept nls pellets and was wandering if 3mm pellets are too big for him, it is the usual food size he receives.

I use 2mm NLS. But even at that size my smaller fish will chew and spit until they can finally breakdown the pellets. NLS pellets are pretty hard! If the pellets are too large for your Dempsey it probably does the same thing. Just watch him as he eats. If it looks like he is having difficulties eating then you may want to soak them in a jar of tank water for a few minutes before feeding them to your fish. You could also try the 2mm if all else fails.

1 mm Thera A+ is good to start them on once it's used to that and gets some size on it you could switch to the 2 mm cichlid formula.

Why not if you already have 3 MM pellets do what you gotta do to so it'll be able to eat it.

I can't find this size in any stores in my area. 2mm is the smallest that I can get. I may have to order some.

Would it be the same if I cut the 3mm pellets in quarters; the pellets are so hard that it is easy to do with a knife.
I tip my hat to you, most of the time I'm too lazy to cut my own food

It's much better to get them started on, I use it for my corys, and all young fish to get them on NLS, my Rams will now only eat the 1mm NLS. My little GT, Trimac and Sajica all get the Thera A+ 1mm. Then as they grow it's an easier transition to get them on the larger pellets.

Personally I would set the 3mm aside until your fish are large enough to eat them, and get them started on the 1mm. A 3mm pellet is far too large for a 2.5" fish, regardless of the brand. The end result is a lot of chewing and a lot of waste. Cutting them up will also result in a fair amount of waste, but that's your call.

FYI - when I was keeping Africans I had a tank full of 8-9" haps that ate the 1mm pellets for years (until the 2mm came out). The less chewing, the less waste, and with 1-2mm pellets the fish could swallow them whole.
