Well I am not too sure on the sex but I do know males tend to get alot bigger and more colorful than females. So if it is bigger than like a foot I would say most likely male. I am not a big pleco nut either so I couldn't tell you. Good luck with them all though.

thanks now all i have to do is get him eating, he will not take anythink bloodworm, pellets, prawn, flake, even put to cons in with him (1inch) and they look like they are going to be his tank mates.
