Been getting into this hobby for the past 6 months and this was my first real "mystery" death.

Had the fish for about 6 weeks or so, grew more than an inch and got thicker in this time. The entire time was in a 4x18"x18" barebottom by itself. A small ceramic pot was in there for cover.
Filtration was a home made wet dry with 4L of matrix, 2000L/h, as well as a powerhead for circulation. As of thursday night 0s for ammonia/nitrite, nitrate was less than 5ppm.
And do a weekly 25% WC, with prime and conditioning salts. Temp is 26 deg C (79F)

The fish was eating last night (pellets) and showing no signs of distress. This morning was belly up. The gill plates were raised when i found him.

Any ideas of what i could of done wrong?

^Thought that might be possible. The water is run through a wet-dry (i thought this would provide mass aeration?), and returns breaking the surface. The tank is about 80% covered. But no, there is not an external air pump

And the fish did not have laboured breathing :irked:? Is it common for a fish to not show signs of distress if its not getting enough oxygen?

Ive moved a group of cardinal tetras from my community tank into the four footer to see how they fair. But so far they look fine?

I think it's going to be pretty hard to say what it was. One guess would be some sort of contaminant in tr tank, like bug spay or air freshener or something--but if the tetras are doing fine in the same water that would rule that out. Maybe it was some sort of health issue like organ failure that was just genetic or something. Strange indeed. Anyone else got any ideas?

^i bought it about 4 months ago. doesnt have an expiration date on it. But my community tank also gets the pellets occasionally

Stumped for a answer. Recheck the water.
