4 foot tanks long enough?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
honestly I say the 6 foot long tank is really the way to go. Just think many cichlids you get will grow up to ~1 foot. And with 1 flick of there tail they are already across 6 feet in my tanks.

Now foot plan you can also see that you get less if you go the 4 ft instead of the 6 foot. Also the tanks just have much more of a presence. Trust me people will walk into my living room and say that looks like a nice tank and compliment me on it (the 75 that is). Then I say why don't have a look at the 135 in my bedroom, and the instant I open the door they are saying wow and gasping. I don't know why but that extra 2 feet just jars them more.

So yes I say don't get the 4 ft tank, find a way to fit in the 6 ft tank. You will be much happier in the long run.

Note and for swimming room: 4 ft 120 gives you ~1200 sq inches.
6 foot tank gives ~1341 sq inches. Obviously the more the better, and have you ever seen large fish swim back in forth in 2 feet of space if the had 4 feet to swim back and forth in.... So would they likely give up the 6 inches for 24 more inches the other way... yes.

i would say the 48x24 would be better than the longer narower tanks. the 24 wide on my 6 foot tank makes alot more swimming area

Obviously you haven't had both to compare or there's no way you would recommend a 4' tank over a 6'.

Go with the six footer. I had a 55 in my living room for a while and people would come by and say "Hey that tanks pretty cool" Now when people come over and see the 6 foot 135 they say "HOLY SHIBBY, you could lay down in that mother lover". A 6 foot tank does have much more presence than a four footer. Also, you will have more options on fish.

To Bublereef it all depends on the type of cichlid of course.

I mean even say looking at lake malawi you will get cichlids that top off at around 3 inches, though most mbunas are say 5-6, but then you can get to the haps which can be up-wards to 14 plus inches full grown. Then if you say are looking at SA/CA cichlids of course you get many types that get even bigger. So it all depends on what you have and what you want when you are looking at size.

I have decided on getting a 90 gallon tank after all (4 footer)

I think it will be fine for my 3inch O and GT.

I also have a Black Shark and Pleco who have only grown to 5inchs in 6 months.

I figure this 90 will be fine for many years to come as long as I don't add fish.

Thanks!

how long or big do cichlids have to be to be considered large anyway? mine are mostly under 3 inches?

depends what "YOU" think is big
i have recently had -

12 - 13inch Red Terror
12+inch male Jag
9inch female Jag
9inch Green Terror

so i would say 6inchers are small, large i would say around the foot mark

That black shark is going to need either a new home or the whole tank to himself in a year or so.

The bigger the better if not you'll find yourself up-grading later and that means more $$$$
