Hello all larger fishy people types.

Currently I have 4 mothers mouth brooding.

3 labidochromis caeruleus, and an unid'd possibly blue johannis? ( Ill post pic. later.)

I am about to pull them from the community and put them in a 80g w/ dividers. I will be keeping the offspring, as i cant identify the males that fertilize.

Heres the question. The first batch of fry from one lab had 3 different markings.

one solid pink. another yellow labs. and last look like labs with convict stripes.

i didnt think that the eggs would accept other milt, but obviously it does.
has anyone kept hybrids with success, these seem healthy. thanks for the advice in advance.

This is not an obvious case actually, and I can point out a few things for you here.

In terms of your Labidochromis Caeruleus, often I have fry that come out VERY pale, almost white and it's just a matter of time before the color sets in. The barred ones, this is actually the norm, not a sign of hybridization. Well it COULD be, but I seriously doubt that on that basis.

What's commonly seen in this species in wild caught ones show bars many times. The pure solid yellow look is something aquarists strive for, but if you examine many wild caught ones, they do show quite a few bars.

Again on the coloring, if you examine wild caughts or wild inhabited ones, this species was first discovered as blue and if I am correct, Caeruleus is greek for blue or blue fish, something like that. They have also found this species has a totally white varient as well.

If you have males of the Labs in there, I don't think they crossed with your supsect Johanni. Wait until the fry grow out a bit more and post some shots please.

I have only taken pics of an aquarium once before, but I have some really nice digi cams here. - apologies for the quality.:(

the first set of the fry are actually 8 juvies 1.5", and 26 4 week old fry 3/4".

the second is one of the mommas, and some more of the gang in the little 80g.

cute pics!! congrats on the new borns! what are you feeding the fry? your ob peacock looks to be male... is he flashing his color?

thx for the coments earthworms, yes he is going from bright to light in the tail section, oh also the fry get naupali, and a small pieces of seaweed (Nori)

I would recommend feeding the fry some cyclop-eeze, its in the frozen food section of some lfs's if you can find it it's great for coloring them up and growing them faster. also nls grow formula is good as well... mine also love spirilina pellets! It appears that you may have a red zebra (metriaclima estherae) and a kenyi as well did you know that?

What is the zebra? (actually im uploading youtube vids for you to see, ill link in a minute.)

Is that the mottled purple/orange?

and what is the Kenyi?
