So I sadly no longer have my 2 125 gallon tanks, but I'm craving to set something smaller up. Would some kinda of thorichthys species be ok in a 40 breeder? or should I go something smaller like nannacara adoteka? Also, any possibility for a dwarf pike in there? I've been out of the game for a few years...

A 40b would be good for one of the smaller Amatitlania like Honduran Red Points or Nanolutae. Some Swords or Plattys as dithers, a bushynose.
Heard of dwarf pikes, never had any myself.

Tho we should start with your source water base peramaters and pick fish that will thrive in it. We need PH and hardness of the water you will be using in your tanks, be it city water or well. If you live in the USA its required that municipal water sources have to publish online for all their water quality reports yearly.

For me I PH 7.8 and hardness of 120 to 250 ppm so best I stay with Cantral Americans or African Rift lake cichlids.

Yes dwarf pike, if that's the only thing in there
smaller amatitlania, any thorichthys, nannacara, and xiphophorus also fit the bill
maybe a single sajica or some other larger amatitlania/cryptoheros if you're just looking for a wet pet
now that duanes has shown me that cutteri can grow to 8"+, I gotta figure out how big I can grow a spilurus.

I've had dwarf pikes in the past with no problem, but they were in the 125 with a good number of distractions (severums, geos and some denison barbs) so I figure the behavior I'd see would be different in something small like a 40. If thorichthys species work, that's probably what I'm most interested in. The issue then is what species and how many...?

Any thorichthys species. They do best in groups or in a pair. Two small of a tank for a group longterm so you can start with a small group of I’d say 4-6 1-2 inchers depends on your luck but as soon as a pair is formed remove the rest. You could keep a school of tetras with the pair aswell.

Ya, I like lemon tetras. They're probably on the table if there's no dwarf pike. Think it'd be best to end with a pair in the 40? I've always heard they do well in a harem type set up, but that may be applying to larger size tanks.

Thorichthys are generally more bark less bite, there may be stress but death and injury shouldn't be too big of an issue with a pair that breaks off from a group.
If it helps your selection at all as far as species goes, pasionis is the biggest, only hitting about 6 inches. Pretty sure meeki gets up there too. Everything else should stay in the 4-5 inch range. Kevin at TUIC currently has a good selection of thorichthys sp at reasonable prices

I picked up three rainbow cichlids (herotilapia multispinosa) from TUIC and I absolutely love them! Perfect cichlid in a small package. Nice colors, low aggression, can be kept in a community.

Thoricthys would be do-able for a good while but not forever, at full max size a group would be packed in there. Need more like a 75 minimum. Maybe just a pair in a 40 would be OK. Still I think it would look small. I've never heard of pasionis being the largest thoricthys, I would have thought maculipinnis. Most of the thoricthys can reach 6" eventually though, may be a few of the less common ones stay 5". Meeki for example can definitely reach 6".
Rainbow cichlids are a good option, a pair would be fine in a 40 for a long while. Placid fish.
I do think dwarf pikes would be good as well. Need a low pH, wheras these other fish mentioned like it higher.
