40 gal filter for a 20g?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I bought this cause its what my lfs had at the moment. He said it was more gph than the 60 hob.

THAT SHOULD BE OK ... but a large hob will be cheaper and work plenty good on a 20gallon...the aqua clear 50 or 70 will be as good for a 20 with less expense

haha, that will certainly be enough.

60 gallon hobs rated by the manufacturers are usually 300-350 gph which would be efficient for a 30 gallon actually. That sun sun canister filter rated at over 300 gph would keep that 20 gallon in real good condition.

That'll work very well. Another bright note is if you upgrade your tank in the future it should be sufficient up to a 55 on its own and can be used on bigger tanks if in conjunction with other filters. Canisters offer more space for media than hobs, if you need help with media be sure to search the forum or just ask.

Canister filters are superior to hob filters and don't need the 10x turnover rate rule applied. That sun sun canister filter plus an Aquaclear 110 hob would do an excellent job on a 55 gallon and 75 gallon. That's just to give you an idea of what you are putting on your 20 gallon. Way overfiltration, but that's a good thing.

You can google it for more info. I looked it up on amazon and seems to come with a uv which is great. And is rated for tanks up to 100 gallons. Like you said its 370 gph. Got good reviews on amazon. I wouldn't use it alone on a tank more than 55 or maybe 75g. But seems like a good unit and one you can keep forever.
