Im setting up a 20" cube tank. Its going to be a temp tank for about 6 months untill I'm done with the set up of my larger tank I have in the garage. My question is do I have to provide additional filtration other than the forty lbs of live rock and four power heads I already have. The tank is not plumbed and I do have several canister filters as well as hob filters at my disposal. Tank is going to be used to start growing out corals for the 220 im trying yo get set up

come fellas. a little advise. i'm wanting to set this up this weekend...

Puttin the tank up tomorro. Prolly put an emperor 400 on just in case unless I get some feed back here soon

if you are going to use the emperor don't use any filter media in it.. your live rock is the main filtration you just need to move the water. on a tank that size just keep up with the water changes.

I am going to have plenty of water movement with the four powerheads. All the 400 is going to do is add mechanical and biological filtration, right? I guess my question is is it necessary considering the live rock will be housing the bacteria. From my understanding of salt water the 400 shouldnt be necessary because I have live rock. I know a skimmer would be nice but I dont want to buy a small skimmer considering the fact that im buying a much larger one for the 220

I mean in theory it Might be ok but I would put the emperor on there. I would really encourage plumbing in a sump/ refugium. Just get an HOB overflow. Is any of the media seeded?

That's a negative. But the live rock does. I would spend the money on a sump/refugium but I have severAl large tanks in the garage and know for sure im going to want to upgrade in a few months. It just cost so much to start up a large salt water tanks... Im trying to spread out the cost over a few months for stock. That way I can have a full tank when I set up the larger one

Oxygen is replenished and nitrogen gas is released from the tank when moving water meets the air -The HOB does this. Powerheads are for circulation of that 02. A HOB will not add biological filtration alone it would need some type of medium for the biology to grow on. Some skimmer systems can do what the HOB does.
