40 gal filtration help

Well what you could do in the emperor is throw in some rubble rock for a little extra bio. The rock in the display will be your main filtration but the hob with rubble will add a little extra. What you might consider as well in throwing a clip in compact flourescent ( like $5 at wal-mart) and some chaeto. That will help with nitrates and phosphates as well as providing a place for pods to cultivate.

This I shall do. I have a perfect clip light as well. Can u buy pods or are they just found in live rock?

The addition of oxygen is also a good point that I had not thought of...

I will have this tank up and running tomorrow and I will be picking up some coral tuesday. Ill post pictures here and likely start a new pic thread of the tanks evolution over the next 3-6 months

Pods are found in live rock. If you know a fellow reefer you can ask him if you can stick a piece of rock rubble in his tank so it can seed. That would be more prolific than buying pods in a bag online. About like live sand lol.

Sorry I just got to this...been crazy busy.

Ill just start from here...seeing where the discussion is now.

I like the plan...coral on tuesday seems a little fast, but as long as it is cycled and you are not planning on stocking too crazily I think that you will be alright.

You can buy pods...you will get them eventually though in your tank overtime from frags etc...when I dip corals if I see pods come out I will pick them out and put them in my tank...I have seen them swim away...so hopefully they make it.

It probably wouldnt be more prolific, but a piece of rock put into your sump or in another area where they could reproduce in safety would be an excellent and cheaper way to start your culture.

what i would do is get a HOB protein skimmer. That, live rock and your powerheads is all you will need.
Do 10% wather changes and your good to go.

Ive been running saltwater tanks for awhile. I have fish/coral tanks and I only run a protein skimmer for the tanks. it adds oxygen and takes out stuff you dont want.
easy way to just keep it simple.

my new dilemma is what protein skimmer to get... I don't want to spend much money on it at all as I have a larger tank sitting here and will have to spend a significant amount on a larger skimmer in a few months... any suggestions?
