Rhom (black piranha) can live in a 40 for upto 2 years. can't get much better than that.
much better than 6" small cichlids. Rhom is even better than monster cichlids

Blue Acara, Salvini, Rainbow Cichlid, Convict, Firemouth, etc.

Along with a myriad of other 3" to 8" cichlids would work as a pair in a 40.

Careful with the larger of these species though; if the pair has a "falling out" they may need a divider and with a tank of that size if the fish are 6" plus there may not be enough room for them in a divided tank (18"x18" square).

I'm doing the same thing (pair of Blue Acara) in a 40 breeder soon, have a group of them in there now, waiting for a pair to form.

why is everyone suggesting cichlids? go to the cichlid section if you want to discuss them. seeing as we are in the general chat it might be good to give him more options than just cichlids.

I would never put a GT in a 40g unless it was definately female
