Hey Everyone,

Hmm im debating between canister filter or hang on filter for a 40 gallon. I would like really good filtration, basically overkill as I will feel more "secure".

I was thinking of using three aquaclear hang on filter (70 gallon size).
2 of these filter will be filled with all sponges (same that come with the aquaclear filter and one will be filled with nothing but pond matrix.

The cost of these three filters will be about $120 do you guys think that will be a good idea or am I stressing too much lol. Any ideas under $120 is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I always go canister over HOB, unless you're doing something that's just too small. I had a Rena XP2 on my 40 gallon breeder tank, and it worked wonderfully, even I was a little overstocked. As far as a good filter for a reasonable amount of money, I can't think of one better than a Rena filter.

I always go HOB over canister, just for ease of maintenance. Three would definitely be overkill. Heck two would be depending what which models you ran and your stock. I ran just an Emperor 280 and a Penguin 150 on mine, but I wasn't over stocked at all.

Depending on your stock, you might want to go two mechanical and one bio ... or for nitrate sensitive species you can do two bio like you mentioned in your post.

Two ac 70s or one 110. I've run my 40b on one ac70 with weekly wc never had any problems

What would be the best mechanical filteration in eighter a hang on or canister? I was thinking of just using foam pads but would pot scrubbies work well as mechanical filteration?

I think a Aquaclear 110 would be good heck might even be overkill for a 40 gallon.

2 ac70's. Should be overkill....:-)

I guess I should add as a caveat to what I said earlier: I always use sand substrate, which destroys HOBs. That alone is a huge reason I always either go with a canister or a sponge.
