40 Gallon Breeder Filteration

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I guess I should add as a caveat to what I said earlier: I always use sand substrate, which destroys HOBs. That alone is a huge reason I always either go with a canister or a sponge.

I've had sand for two years now and haven't lost one hob. It's the type of sand you use.

What would be the best mechanical filteration in eighter a hang on or canister? I was thinking of just using foam pads but would pot scrubbies work well as mechanical filteration?

Sponges and filter floss. Pot scrubbies are for biological filtration.

Agreed. Pool filter sand is too heavy to be picked up by a HOB.

I've used river sand from a local river, play , pool filter sand and hobby sand never any issues

I've used play sand before. It was terrible. If a fish darted around the bottom it would send plumes all over the place. This is after being washed too. Ill stick to the PFS any day.

I've actually grown to like the Petco sand. It's a lot like pfs just in different colors and heavy.

I have a 40b and have run both canisters and aquaclears on it.
I can tell you off the bat, that if you run 1 or 2 Ac110s, you will satisfy your "overkill" needs.

The reason I recommend the Ac110 is because of its much larger surface area filtration vs the Ac70 and the mechanical sponges are huge.
If you run 2 of them, you got nearly 1000gph (if they are correct with their measurements)

Also, adding a powerhead towards the bottom of the tank would be a plus, as that would help shoot the waste towards the filters intake tube
