ok,im down to these 2 fish convict or firemouth and possible combos
1 of each
1 pair of each
or just solo
anyone have any of these combos please chime in. does it or will it work
 
I wouldn't try a pair of each in a tank that small. It seems like it'd be an all-out war. You could probably do okay with a pair of cons and some small, hardy dithers.
 
U can only do a pair of either fish. As what is stated above getting a pair of both will mean torn find ampnd stressed fish, maybe even death. I prefer a pair of FM's and some dither (e.g. buenos aires tetras and the like).

got to agree ,a pair of fm with ba tetras and a small pleco would be good in a 40,cons get to agressive when paired up for any tankmates in a 40

I'm in the same boat. My 40 gallon breeder tank is cycling right now and I can't decide what to put in there. I'm thinking about taking my two FMs out of my bowfront and buy three more from my lfs to find a pair.
 
I have a single jd in a 40 breeder ,quite a wet pet ,he's actually got a striped raphy in as a tankmate but the raphy is a little shy....jd'sIthink are great in the 40
