Hey guys!
I'm new to the forum but I've kept fish for about 2 years now:)
I'm about to get a 40 gallon (36.25" x 18.25" x 17") tank and I was wondering what fish to put in it.
I would mainly like to have one fish species throughout the whole tank so it looks simple and nice(in my opinion)
I plan on going for a bare bottom tank but I will put a piece of driftwood with plants attached. Please let me know if I should do a planted tank for the fish I want to get.
I want to get some Denison Barbs but from what I understand they get pretty big..
As alternatives I want to get some Cardinal Tetras or some Blue Angelfish. Let me know if any of these are not going to work for my 40 gallon.
Thanks in advance!

The fish will work, also a school of Corys as the bottom fish, with the tetras and angelfish will make a exciting tank.

Tbh a 40 gallon would be a bit tight for Angelfish especially a group. Also if your PH is high and your water in your area is hard 7-8 PH range the Cardinal Tetra will be a challenge to keep if they are wild caught. They are captive bred now and those Cardinal Tetra are what you want.

Welcome aboard

i also agree with tlindsey, angels might be a tad cramped in a 40. but you do you. i would change them out for maybe firemouths with denison barbs but again not a lot of people like aggressive fish. just my 2 cents

So would keeping Denisons be okay? I've heard they get pretty big so I'm worried if I get them they'll grow out of my tank. If they are okay, then how many could I keep?
Also, if I opt to go with the tetras would I have to do a planted tank or would a piece of driftwood with plants attached be sufficient?

I personally don't have any experience with Denison Barbs but yes plants attached to driftwood and a group of Tetra would work.

The dennisoni barbs would grow quite large eventually, I've got a couple in a 45 gallon that I can tell are getting a little big for it. A good substitute would be rummynose tetras. I would test your pH of yor source water, most tetras will do better on the lower or neutral end of the spectrum. Could do Malawi cichlids like somebody suggested if your pH is higher. That would work with your single species idea; plenty of smaller mbuna which could work in a species group in a 40 for example, something like a small group of labidochromis"perlmutt"
