40 Gallon Stocking

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
ok so I've decided to go for the tetra idea mainly because budget reasons and I would like the overall view of a shoal of cardinals.
I'd like to know how many I could keep in a 40G? I've read a 40G can accommodate 100 tetras, but I'd like y'all's opinion as well :)

Or I could go with a rainbow fish tank.. Your opinions on that? Sorry if I'm asking too many questions I just want to get all my research done before I actually set up the tank

We are starting to have a good group of people around 14-16 years old I see. Good to see younger people getting involved in fish keeping.

May I interest you in black phantom tetras? They are a very lovely tetra. The males develop a longer dorsal fin and turn a darker shade of black than the females. Truly just beautiful. I’ve had some before and I recommend them to everybody.

I have a low tech heavily planted 40 breeder with an established group of blue dream neocaridina shrimp, and a variety of snails, and recently added a group of yellow tiger endlers. Very entertaining tank. Lots of things to look at, and a lot of activity. Another idea that I'd like to do in a 40b would be African shell dwelling cichlids, along with some cyprichromis or paracyprichromis up top.

How many of those phantoms could I keep in my tank?
I'm really liking rainbowfish right now so it'd be nice if you could tell me how many of those I could keep too:)

For rainbowfish, what species are you most interested in or what’s available. The smaller species I think you could keep 10 at most, and for larger species 6 at most as they are active schooling fish. My personal favorite are Goyder river rainbowfish.

Yeah I really like the Goyder river rainbows. I'm also thinking about Dwarf Neons and the Boesemani rainbowfish as well.

Since you were also thinking of phantom tetras; 7 tetras, 6 dwarf neons, and 3 boesemani and 3 goyder I could see work. Since I noticed different rainbowfish species at my lfs schooled as one group.

If you’re only interested in one species than I wouldn’t hesitate to put 3 dozen black phantom tetras in a 40 breeder.

One species that would look cool, budget friendly, and fun to feed would be a school of tiger barbs. A full grown tiger barb is a tank of a fish with great colors, they also come in albino and green form.

You can put down a substrate with some driftwood, anubias on driftwood, and some crypts, dwarf sagittaria, and vallisnaria in the back.

This would be a fun easy tank to create. I've been contemplating starting one myself.
