40 ppm Nitrates enough for HITH?

the lfs salesman was just that a salesman, his entire goal was to sell you something, if he told you the real answer to your problems was that you needed to feed a quality diet, and change more water do you think you would be leaving the store with anything besides a smile and your money in your pocket? api master test kit is a tried and true quality test kit, the nitrate test if i remember correctly is a p.i.t.a. are you sure your doing it 100% correctly? are you doing it exactly per the instructions? i believe you have to do something like shake the test tube for 5 minutes which sucks.

ya it really is a p.i.t.a. for nitrates you have to put 10 drops form one bottle into the test tube shake it then shake the 2nd bottle for 30 seconds then add 10 drops from the second bottle and shake the test tube for 1 min then let it sit for 5 min

:screwy: i did it so many times i have it memorized :screwy:

and he did say that the only way to get rid of nirtates was a water change

im suprised he didnt try to sell you magic potion nitrate remover in a bottle or some such bullsheit. putting macro balls in your sump with some lighting would probably help some, or plumbing a seperate drilled tank off the same sump to have nothing but plants in, you could do kind of a hydroponics set up if you wanted to, go from tank to tank to tank to tank all plumbed together and all off 1 pump from the sump then back to the sump. would do wonders for an indoor flower room for your mom.... ;) just about any plant can grow in a set up like that, just make sure if you use a plant with a bulb you keep the bulb above water level and only have the roots coming out the bottom of the bulb in the water. now that would severly put a dent in your nitrate problem...... like to the extreme of you wouldnt even need to do water changes if you had enough plants in the system.

that just gave me a great idea im gonna put a 10 gallon tank above the 100 and stuff it with plants and breed shrimp on it for the polys and oscar

all id have to do is plumb a pump from the 100 to the 10 and drill 1 or 2 holes in the back of the 10 so that the water would overflow ints the 100

would a 10 gallon be enough the get rid of my nitrate problem?

no, you would need more like pvc pumping to 10 20L tanks around the room/house to take care of the nitrate problem, but a 10 would help, along with water changes
