I see that it's right up against the wall. I like WyldFya's idea of just throwing one or two HOB filters on there. Could you fit an AC110 or Emporer 400 at the other end of the tank? If so... that may be your best bet.

Since nitrite and ammonia are you problem, try adding a bio wet/dry tower on top of the water unit at the end of the tank.
