400 Gallon tank fail

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Last time we moved wife said all tanks in basement - this is why. Ouch.

Dammmmmmm feel sorry for him
Yeah something like that would destroy the entire house.
I had a 150 reef start leaking. But it wasn't a blow out like this.
I lost everything about 5000 worth of live rock, corals and fish.
Well I lost everything but it didn't die. I took everything to a local reef store they were happy to take it. Of course

I believe the owner of that tank now has a replacement tank that is equally large. His buddy posted a video as well. I give him kudos for bouncing back soon after.

How do things like this even happen? Old tanks? how can we prevent things like this?

it was probably old, but it could have been made badly too. couldn't tell was it a glass tank? I will never buy a used glass tank

If it was on a second floor this probably the cause. A misconception is that a tank will break through the floor but that would just not happen. The weight of the tank will eventually warp the floor so that it is not level. Once the floor is no longer level it starts putting significantly more pressure on the glass. This eventually will lead to the glass cracking/breaking. I am guessing the same will happen with acrylic.

For large vessels only ponds and custom, overbuilt acrylics for me. I've had too many failures over the years plus more money is needed in clean up and repairs and loss of life than in building it like a rock the first time. I've seen this happen from metal halide lights over the braces on glass and acrylic tanks. LED or non UV flourescents are the only bulbs that should be touching or close to the lid of your tank. Most other bulbs make too much heat and can warp your braces. If glass it can heat them up, then if a fish splashes too much water on warm glass cracks can form with rapid change in temperature.

This is a nightmare. Buy or build overbuilt, level it before. Nothing large on upper floors like said before.

Horrible..I'm sorry this happened, especially the fish loss. I just bought renter's insurance, I'm not sure if we're covered for this type of thing.
