Gday,

I am very close to ordering a new 112G tank to replace my old 47G. My question is would a fluval 405 be perfectally adequate to filter the new tank, or will i need a Fx5? Money being the issue.

The tank I am planning on getting is 6foot long, 20inches high and 18 inches wide. Inital stock will be the occupants of the 4 foot, 4 discus, 1 sailfin pleco, and 14 neons. I wish to add once things have settled, a pair of pictus and another discus.

The 405 will turn the water over 4 times every hour, while the Fx5 will do it about 7 times in an hour.

Also does anyone run a 405? I already have an Fx5 on another tank and am very happy with it, just needing a bit of experience on the 405.

Thanks, Plec.

I run two 405's on my 100 gallon, so I can alternate when I clean them out. They've worked great for me.

With your stock list, you prob only need one 405 and a hang on.

I have a fluval 404 on my 75. I don't think it is enough; I'm adding an AC110 soon.

Seriously, what is the point adding a AC110? Just go buy another canister.

A Fluval 405 is rated for 225 GPH. Im pretty sure it will be around 190 GPH.

The 405 will turn the water over 4 times every hour, while the Fx5 will do it about 7 times in an hour.

Some error in your math. A Fluval 405 has a documented flow rate of 225 GPH (not 405 GPH). Actual flow will probubly be around 190 GPH leaving you with a turn over rate of 1.6 cycle per hour.

A Fluval 405 will NOT work for your 112 Gallon tank.

A single Fx5 will give you tank 5.3 cycles per hour. Fx5's Actual flow is 600 GPH. Not 900 GPH (That is the pump output, not the filter output)

With your stock list, you prob only need one 405 and a hang on.
Seriously folks, stop telling people to get a HOB when they are going with canisters..

you have 3.6 cycles per hour in your tank btw. What kind of fish you have?

Some website i was on rated the 405 for a 400L tank, turning over 1300l per hour, and the fx5 1500l tank and 2300l turn over per hour, so its not my math but the figures i used! (okay maybe also a bit of rounding!) Besides when are you americans going to join us in the future? Go the Metric system!!!

Do you mean i need 3.6 cycles an hour? In the tank i am upgrading i have 4 discus, a sailfin pleco and neons.

This tank is also going to be heavily planted with mostly slow growers and a few stems. only low tech but.

Why do you people need to make things so damn confusing using a metric system! We don't need to be THAT accurate!

The comment about 3.6 cycles per hour was toward the other member. I have no experience with your stocking but I will say 5-7 cycles per hour minimum.

I am going with a FX5 for my 125 and maybe something else. (power head for more water movement???) I have tried to get the same answer also!!
