40b dwarf community tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks for all the feedback.

I got the single krib to avoid any aggression/breeding. I don't want baby fish or deal with extra aggression due to it.
I also picked the krib because it gets to 4inches or so. (currently he/she is 1inch)

i'll nix the apisto to play it safe though.

I hope that i have a nice calm krib...this fella was in a tank with a full size male and he didn't appreciate this one-so he was hiding in the back for the 30min I was watching him.

but i feel that my tank is very heavily decorated (pictures on first post) to help with the separation needed for these cichlids.

i'm not trying to discredit anyone here, as the feedback is appreciated.

All you can do is try it. Everyone has different experiences with different fish. If you start seeing aggression just take the krib out...

haha. great point.

I think i'll try it and see what happens! lets hope they are all happy campers.
But first, I got to get my hands on keyholes and QT them as well.

You are not discrediting anyone. Everyone has their own experiences and opinions about fish based on those experiences. I have never had kribs and keyholes in the same tank, but I expect there will be aggression issues based on the experiences I have had with kribs.

Females kribs in my experience max out around 4-5", but the males I have all reached 6".

All you can do is try it out and keep an eye on them. If you see aggression in the tank and try to fix it, but nothing happens, you will have to rehome someone.

And if you do get a keyhole, make sure it starts out 1-2" bigger than the krib.

Great point on the Keyhole, Patrick.

I'll have to make sure they are bigger to help that out.

We'll see. It always is a gamble. I had a Dwarf Gourami and he tore my tank to pieces. (knock on wood. lol) so you are correct-they vary so much.

Just make sure to add them all at once. If a krib becomes territorial it's less likely to tolerate other fish in its space. I recently added some Enigmatochromis lucanusi to a 55 gallon with Dicrossus foirni. The E. lucanusi are very krib-like and I was told they'd rip the Dicrossus apart. So far they're getting along wonderfully. Again, I don't expect issues unless the E. lucanusi decide to spawn.

I used to raise out kribs all the time with angels and discus. For a while they were in every tank. The only real problem I had with aggression was toward other kribs. My concern with the Apistos is that they tend to be small and also tend to be low-level fish that stick near the bottom, just like kribs. This would lead to territorial issues and more frequent run-ins. Bolivian rams are fairly sturdy and boisterous compared to M. ramirezi so they will probably be fine.

that is the plan.:D

I'll search for the keyholes and put them in QT too-and get their first interaction with the krib
but then when i'm ready to set up the 40b all at once, i'll add in all the fish at once (the rams, tertras from the old tank). that way everybody explores and gets acquainted to their own areas and is happy!

I appreciate the information and hearing your success.

Kudos on keeping them with such delicate fish. I bred kribs for a while years ago during my African fad, but all the ones I had (both bought and personally bred) were little monsters most of the time. A pair would get along just fine with no aggression, but they hated their own kind if I didn't give them 30 gallons per pair and even the few I did end up keeping singly with other fish would dominate their tanks. Granted my tanks were relatively small (a 55 and 2 40Bs), so I couldn't keep much of anything that got bigger than a krib.

If you get apistos, make sure you don't mix the species. Ideally just get a single pair.

What kind of driftwood is in that tank?
