40g Breeder project underway

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
how have you liked the hagen CO2 generators? I was thinking of picking up one of those at least for the 10g im setting up, but havnt heard much about it

I actually like them a lot, in fact I just bought another today to use on a 10g I'm planning on using mainly as a 'plant hospital/rooting tank".

I always dump any bits of plants, or stuff that isn't doing too well into a 6g I have with Guppy/Endler hybrids, Red Cherry Shrimp and lots of snails - the snails and shrimp eat the dead/dying foliage and just about everything seems to grow in there.
The 6g is getting too crowded so decided to dedicate a 10g for the job using water syphoned from my other tanks when I do WC's so the plants will get plenty of nitrates.

Anyway, the C02 generators on the 40g breeder have done a pretty good job, just changed the mixture in one for the first time yesterday so looks like it lasts about a month which is affordable. Plants are doing well on it also - I'll try and post some new pics tonight.

alright that sounds great man. I think i am going to pick a couple of those up, thanks for the good input, and i cant wait to see an update!

Update pic, after 2 weeks, decent growth including algae on the driftwood which I was hoping for (some on glass which the Otto's haven't dealt with yet). Going to be making a canopy style frame to raise the light fixture 6-8 inches and also accomodate a blue moonlight fixture and a dusk/dawn fixture (another thread when I start it).

The swords at the front left are Kleiner Bar Sword and are leaf colour is starting to change to red showing the effects of the twin T5's. Also Cabomba and Cabomba Furcata are definitely getting bigger, Brazilian Micro Sword has thickened up and needs trimming. The plants at the right are Pogostemon stellata Eustralis and have also filled out and are starting to turn red at the top.

OK, here's the latest, despite the title there is still work to do - one of the C02 ladders isn't bubbling too well, there is Cabomba Furcata floating around all over the place and Green Cabomba needs trimming, BUT.......

Haven't done a WC for 2 weeks but have topped up maybe 3 times - 2 gal a time, so decided I have to do a WC today or risk loosing fish, but first I tested parameters, and now I am sooooo HAPPY!!! :grinno:

Ph 6.4 (still low but coming up gradually as I wanted):grinno:
Amm 0ppm (worried only having the Magnum 250 wouldn't be enough):grinno::grinno:
Nitrites 0ppm:grinno::grinno::grinno:
Nitrates <10ppm:grinno::grinno::grinno::grinno:

So.....No WC I can go ahead and tidy up the plants, top up the water and no need to carry buckets!:D:D:D:D:D

Here's an updated pic, the DIY canopy was needed so I could raise the main lighting and I decided to make it so I could experiment with a couple of lights from some Petsmart 10g 'specials', using blue bulbs on one and red on the other to simulate evening and early morning (spawning time for Boesemani Rainbows). The canopy frame still needs covering, on the lookout for something to do this with.

Let me know what you think, any suggestions, criticisms.

Neary forgot, stock list :
6 x 2"-3"+ Boesemani Rainbowfish
5 x Harlequin Rasboras
4 x Otocinclus
Dozens (and counting) Nerite (olive I think) snails
1 x Malaysian Trumpet snail - growing fast, almost 1" long

Going to be adding a dozen or so RCS soon as my male RCS' do their job (have 7 or 8 'saddled' females in my 6g)
