My planted tank (was a community, but it's been changed to a rescue tank for the last year or so.) The fish in it are going to go to a permanent home soon (finally!), and I've been contemplating what to go in.

I don't think I want anything small again, I just don't like the community fish anymore.

Suggestions for medium sized cichlids to put in there?

(I posted this in a different section, but went back to here because it's the type of fish I want.)

I would suggest a salvini, and HRP, an eartheater, and some silver dollars or other dithers. That should be a good balance of color and movement distribution. Good luck!

Rams, angels, Maybe a blue acara.
Etc.

I've had rams and angels a while ago, but I never enjoyed them as much as my bigger cichlids. Blue Acara is a nice idea.

After looking up, I think a HRP would be an awesome fish to have.

What are some good tank mates a HRP could have in a 40 gal? I already have a very angry little salvini, and I think it'd be stressful to have two!

Any suggestions for HRP tank mates?

Well you could just move the salvini into the 40 and then use its tank for something else. If you were to do that then I would say a small eartheater would be a good finishing touch. If you'd prefer to keep the salvini out of this tank you could always go with a severum or uaru. But i personally the first option would be more interesting.

I have the salvini in with my Jag / JD / Pleco.

Then how about a Cryptoheros Nanoluteus and an eatheater then?

I'm really digging the HRP that you suggested, I've never seen that before! It's a great fish.

I've read their territorial, but not that aggressive. Is an earth eater or an acara with a HRP a smart move, or would he tear them apart?

I think it would work, however personally I feel the tank would be a bit boring with a Blue acara AND a HRP because of the lack of variation of colors. That's why I recommended Cryptoheros Nanoluteus, which btw, looks similar to a salvini but with less of a temper.
