40x18x18???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I wouldn't do it, trust me..... water changes will be a ***** and 40" is not enough swimming space. If you want to keep a juvie in there go nuts.... but when he gets like 8" move him into something bigger. Oscars end up being really big. I know your thinking oh well a RD gets like 14" and a Oscar is only 12". But I guarantee you that a full grown Oscar will have double the waste of a full grown RD and will be a lot thicker.

as long as you stay up on filter maintenance then you should be fine, there was actually I post I saw on Ofish.com that someone had a 12"+ O in a 30gal and kept the nitrates under 20ppm with 1 yes ONE water change a week and it was witnessed by her friend to actually posted it, so you tank would be fine.

as for tankmates I do not recommend anything under half the size of the oscar because the O will eat it...

also it would take about a year for your O to grow to 8"s and then another year plus to reach 12"+

Thanks everyone, i am aware of the size and waste produce of these animals, as i have said in my 1st post i have kept them before, but this was in tanks over 100gallons, i think i will get an oscar and keep him/her till 8 or 9" then move it into my 180gal, thanks everyone

Did you not sell you 6x2x2 coz of car/college?
or did you have 2?

nice to see you around again mate:D

Hi shane, yeh i sold it, then i changed my mind then i sold it again hahaha, but i have got my m8 who has a 5x2x2 to take her when she gets 2 big....

a 40"x18x"18", is enough of space for an adult oscar. the footprint is fine. the length would be better a bit longer, but it is enough space for an adult. would 8" more in length be better- yes, but it won't harm the fish. the width is perfect for a 12-14" fish. and as adults ime they slow down alot, and won't need a huge amount of length in the tank to have adequate swimming room.

Erm thanks for that bushfish hahaha, thats what i thought XR but i just thought i would check, but i think i will go ahead and get one, not sure which strain tho, thanks everyone.
