You're probably right jgallagher. Last bad one I bought was retail too. It's a shame that the best designed HOB is followed by such piss poor quality control. I can accept a few flaws from time to time only because they are such great filters overall. They do come with a lifetime warranty, I am sure Hagen will send me a new tube. I'll keep ya posted.

Well I set up my AC110 on my 75g today to build up some BB before I get the 125g done that way I can just take it from the 75g and put it on the 125g when it's full to speed up the cycle. With that explained I must say, I am unimpressed with the AC filters for as much praise as they receive. Granted I paid a fraction of retail so I'll let it go but had I paid full price I'd be pissed. I get the thing setup and it keeps sucking air. It took me a minute but I figured out it was coming in from the pickup tube near the top. Factory flaw, it wasn't sealed and had a crack/gap. Not a big deal, some silicone fixed it. But still not that impressive for these holy grail of filters. I'll not be getting another.
i printed out the 44.99 price and went to petsmart. manager price matched it for me, no trouble. it looked brand new in the shrink wrap, all pretty in the light. then i opened it...
well, the intake pipe is cracked and the top cover is scratched up from like a razor blade or something. really weird. i fixed the tube with some silicone so its ok. but the filter is noisy. i mean really loud. i have it in the room next to my bedroom and i have to close the door to sleep at night. its almost as loud as the dam refrigerator!!! i mean, wth. the emperor 400 i had a while back was no where near as loud as this.
i think i might have a got a bad one. maybe ill just sell it on ebay as used and try to keep some of the money wasted on this.
