I liked those and the bio wheels because I felt the bio wheels have a good amount of surface area for bio filtration.
I have run the xp1 on a plnat tank and really liked it. One for one the fx5 is better than the xp3 I think (never have run either of them tho) but for the price that you can get the xp3 for you can get 2 for a little more than one fx5. Then it may tip in the xp3's direction.

What size tank do you have? You can get the Fx5's new from ebay for about $200 shipped
