450 gallon tank on 2nd floor ????

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
hmm maybe if your 2nd floor is made of thick concrete.

actually when I say second floor it's really the first floor with basement under it. It's 2x8 joists 16 OC.....I would be putting the tank across the joists not along with them.

a great article on the subject, that should be a sticky here and on AC.

I would not try it unless you have concrete floors.

you risk structural damage over the long term I would think with that much dead weight sitting in one spot for so long..

i had my 90 in my 2nd floor apt. for a couple years but a 450, that's scary to me...

I'd cut some 2x4's and put them between the joists to prevent deflection, then put a double 2x4 header and footer, then put 4x4 posts about 16" on center. I'd do that for both sides of the tank. Drop by my house if you get a chance, I'll show you the bracing I did for my 180, you could do basically the same as I did with one additional support wall. That'll be plenty strong.

:iagree: and its not like you would be moving it alot.. like I said its about 3,800 pounds in just water.. not including substrate, if you choose to have it, rock, the tank itself, stand even fish.... I wouldnt rissskkk ittt

i wouldnt do it. and i wouldnt spend the money to have an engineer come tell you that you couldnt do it either. unless the tank is very long and you placed it along alot of joists, and braced them, wouldnt chance it myself.
