He wants decent sized fish but doesn't want just one.

He needs a bigger tank then.

My suggestions (each line is a different possible setup)

2 Thorichthys sp. (ie. Firemouth)
2 Aequidens pulcher
2 Convicts
1 Severum and 1 of the above.

Really there's a whole bunch of possible fish he could keep but they'd be the most mainstream. Realistically though, 46 is a small tank; perfect for Dwarf Cichlids. Personally if I was setting it up I'd have a few Curviceps/Dorsigera mixed with Corydoras and Tetra.

I agree! He does need a bigger tank. This is his first tank and for some reason he has his mind set that he wants big fish. I am selling the tank to him and offered to give him my 5 Bumblebee Mbuna but he doesnt seem to want them.

...or some dwarf pikes! gotta love small crenicichla!

Maybe a female JD and a con or two.

He could go with the Aulonocara species from lake Milawi. There are several "peacocks" as they are called that would only grow to about 4-5 inches and do ok in that tank. Also could do the Neolamprologos brichardi cichlids. They don't grow large and are very good in a species tank by themselves.

I am assuming he is looking for ca/sa cichlids, being that he posted in this section.

Sorry to derail, but 5 Crabro (Bumblebee Mbuna) will need a 55 minimum and hopefully it is 1 male and 4 females.

yea you definitely need a bigger tank. with that 46 bow front, you can put a couple of black convicts and maybe a jack dempsey or two. same happened to me. i started with a 26 bow front and upgraded to a 90 gallon and still looking to get bigger. i have a guapote tank so you know i need the room.
