480g Brainstorms

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have a call in to universal. Jeremy is going to call me tomorrow. the low profile background seems like a good option.

As for the overflow, I decided I will have my acrylic guy build an 18"x6" box on the left corner of the tank. This will not be very noticeable due to where the tank will be going.

I'm getting the first of two fx5s tonight!

Also, I haven't addressed lighting but I ordered some led stuff on eBay as a tester on my 110g tall. I'm hoping to replace all my lights with led by the end of the year.

If you checked out their website, they have overflow covers

If you want a low profile 3D background for a 4' tall tank, Universal Rocks can make one for you. Mastiffman recommended them. I had never heard of them before.

Here's my 15' x 4' background still in the box

They have all kinds of interesting things, including overflow covers, caves, rocks, tree products. Stuart and Talei are the owners. I have found Jeremy, one of their salemen, also very helpful. If you want a 4' tall background, you have to talk to them. Looking at the website, it doesn't appear that they make custom backgrounds, but they certainly do.

Another member wrote that Universal Rocks never returned his calls. I've had no problems getting in touch with them. I was not able to find any other company that could make a 4' tall background for me.

Pacu Mom: Is your pic of the "rocky" background? I am leaning towards that one in conjunction with an overflow cover. How does it look submerged and with lights on it? They said it loses its brown colorations and looks grey/blue with actinic lights?

Pretty sure I've had that BG. It looks decent in person (not my favorite but not bad). I gave it to JK47 and he put it in a 55 (if it's the same one) and has posted some pics recently.

My friend has a tank like this I recommended bottom drains so you don't have to clean the bottom of the tank. He has never had to clean his with bottom drains going to a sump. Look up and ask wheatgerm

They called it "rocky background". I didn't really see that size on their website. I'm sorry I can't answer your question on how it looks submerged, as it is not installed yet :( :( and I ordered it 10/27/11. It is also smaller than I wrote--invoice says it's 14' 10" x 3' x10". I tried to allow for the acrylic thickness, but we will still have to trim it a little. It's going on the tank floor in lieu of a bare floor tank. My picture was taken in the garage, and the lighting was not very good, so it's not an accurate representation of the product. Actually, the rocky background picture on their website is a really bad picture. My background does not look like that. Mine has a lot more brown/tan color. I was really pleased when I got mine, because it looked much better than the ugly pic they have on their website.

I'm sure they would be willing to send you a sample. (They sent me samples of plain polyurea material). There are quite a few vendors who sell the smaller Universal Rock backgrounds. I think the one I have is a bigger version of this one:

What I liked was that they made me one piece and I didn't have to buy a bunch of 48" x 24" pieces to lay down sideways to span the 4' width.

Mine looks similar to that. The picture I've posted is all I've seen of it. It appears to be that thin. It's quite heavy, and I have to wrestle the box around. Husband has to climb in the tank and get an accurate measurement of the floor before we unroll and trim it down. I've only taken a peek at a corner of it.

I'm checking to see if they do the marine background in 4ft size as well. If they do, then I will get samples to compare, nice thinking!

Let's talk stand for a minute...what can/should I expect to pay for a steel stand that is 96" x 24" x 30" ?

Actually, Egon helped me get the tank and I've seen all of his setups. I'm hoping he will chime in soon = )

Chiming in now LOL. Looking forward to seeing that background in the tank :)

I like your filtration ideas. I like using both canisters and sumps on my tanks.

Canisters are perfect for circulating water in the lower areas of the tank, they are closed loop so you can have the intakes and returns right at the bottom where all the poo is.

Sumps are great for adding water capacity, hiding heaters, hiding bio media, and cleaning the oils and surface scum off the waters surface. If you can get an overflow box installed you should, look into it if the price is right. I would put the overflow in one corner, maybe 4 to 5" from the back and angling into the back of the tank, like a triangle. Just one straight piece across the back corner. 5" from the back and maybe 20"across. That would give you enough room to put a 2" bulkhead for a drain. It would be easy to cover this with the background you picked out because the overflow wont have any sharp corners. Plumbing is easier with just one over flow. Water drains from the tank to one side of the sump. Pump the water out of the sump to the other side of the tank. Nice circular flow, no dead spots.

It was fun moving that tank and even more fun drinking all that beer you bought :) Take some pictures when you get that tank home :)

Do you have a friend or relative who welds?

On this thread of mjuniorc's 600 gallon tank "I've been monsterized", HULON builds the steel stand for him.

The best way to keep cost down would be to build it yourself and buy your supplies from a business that sells new and scrap metal. We drove over 2 hours to get better pricing on the tubular steel we used. Call around and get pricing on the steel you would be needing. Even if you don't build it yourself, you would then know what the materials are going to cost. Or, you could just get estimates from welders in your area. Estimates are generally free.
