  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Didn't you guys used to have a large capacity plywood aquarium back in the day?

I love that footprint

Might consider a group of buenos Aires tetras as dither/target fish .

Do you have line of sight blocks
Hey yes I've set the tank up with some driftwood and lava rock through the middle that both provides a hidey hole and blocks line of sight. The tank also came with a pirate ship ornament and a barrel so while the fish still fit in them I've kept them as well near the ends of the tank.

Thanks for all the info guys! I'll leave it and keep an eye on how things are going. I do plan on eventually upgrading to a 6 foot. For now instead of adding fish I'll look at upgrading filtration that can also handle a 6 footer (just gotta convince the mrs)

I never actually planned on getting an oscar but was convinced at the shop it would be a good tank mate for if the jd got aggressive. So far no issues in the tank apart from the odd chase.

Thanks again for the information everyone!

Hey guys just wanted to put up an update. I got home from work a couple days ago and the j.d was relentlessly chasing both the oscar and green terror that were double his size.

I got the j.d out and put him on his own but unfortunately the other two were too stressed out and didn't make it. I'll be looking at getting rid of the j.d and getting something less aggressive this time and do more research through this forum rather than just buying what the shop says.

Thanks for everyone's input on this post.

You've heard of the 10 commandments? Well on here we have an 11th one.....thou shalt not listen to foolish advice from LFS operatives! Lol.

Either come here or do your own research.

Sorry to hear about your father, it's good that you share his passion. Good luck.

I know a lot of people do it, but to me, oscars and JDs should never be kept in the same tank.
JDs are from high pH, high mineral content waters in Mexico, and their normal territorial aggression level is on much more heightened level, they often come from and defend areas from, and where few other cichlid species are present.
Here is an example of the water parameters in their area.

Oscars are on a less much territorial plane and come from neutral to low mineral content waters from S American where many other specie of cichlids are present, so a much more variance of tolerance,
Below the type waters oscars come from

One other thing to consider, a 6" JD will often be much older than a 6 " oscar, so the JD may be at the height of its territorial needs, and experience as an individual
A 6" oscar is just out of beyond a juvie, and not yet able to handle the much more territorial adult.

Haha yes I've figured that out pretty early luckily! This forum seems more knowledgeable than the staff at my local stores.

Thanks mate, appreciate it.
