I like all of the suggestions so far but with having kept the mentioned species I'm not comfortable with housing 12-15" adults in something so small tbh. I do however like the idea of a larger cichlid with a couple of smaller tankmates but preferably it would be at most 8" since that tank would be only 24"

How about a EBJD, since they seem to be a bit more calm, with a couple firemouths
 
How about a nice south American community?
Lots of plants, driftwood and sand for décor.
As for fish, plenty of Geophagus, angelfish, uaru, etc. small cichlids. And a school of tetras.

I. Have the perfect solution u can either go central American in which case
X2 ellioti firemouth cichlids(pair)
X1 electric blue jack dempsey
X2 rainbow cichlids
X8 butterfly goodeids
Or if u want oddballs go African
X2 butterfly fish
X2 blockhead cichlids
X4 upside down catfish
X10 Congo tetras
X1 African knife fish
Plant it with anubias and African fern
Or if u wanted a mixture
X1 rainbow Wolf fish
X1 tyre track eel
X5 glass headstanders
X1 pink tail chalceus
X2 flier cichlids
X1 snowball pleco

Just do a hap tank, pick your favorite haps, say ten of them, put in a couple of rocks, some sand some floating plants, and enjoy simple beauty with plenty of activity and variety.
