4'x4'x12" Tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
far too shallow, they like to swim up the sides, other than a very short term growout, i dont think any species could be in there for life

Aborting plan...getting a 6ft. X 3ft. X 3 ft. Now can a tank this size house two rays and a big fish

This size tank would house a couple of ray and a few swimming fish for maybe two years. I have tanks like this and I have housed rays in them for years, just depends on the ray type, or how much it grows.
You would be ok for awhile with a tank like that.
Just remember, that size tank is a heavy tank, and then water added, sand if you decided to add and etc, thats going to be alot of weight. So make sure your floor can hold it.
Me, I use those size tanks till its time for the rays to go into the pond tank. So it can be done. But just for a few years.. Maybe longer depending on the ray.

A 6x3x3 is about 400 gallons, would be great for one of the smaller ray species, true hystrix, scobina, or retic. Male motoros or marbles would probably be ok as they don't get much over 12", but females wouldn't fit in there very well.

I disagree. 6 x 3 x 2(height) is more than enough to house most rays like leos and pearls as well. Even the females. In fact most rays are ok with a 2.5 feet width.

If you start with a pup, 12 inch height is only good for a year or so. 2 feet height would be ok for life. 3 feet is too high. I would go with 2.5 or 2 height otherwise you cant reach anything in the tank.

Male motoros can easily grow well over 18 inches within 4 years. I dont know where you got the idea that male motoros stop growing at 12 inches.

The tank is ok for about 3-5 rays depending on size.

Sorry but I am going to have to disagree with you. I would never keep a female leopoldi for life in a 3ft wide tank, sure you can fit them in there even full grown but a 3ft wide tank is no place for a 2 ft ray. I had an 18" marble in a 8x3x3 and it was to small for her by my standards.

You are right about the motoro males, what i ment to say was that motoro males usually don't get much over the 12-14" size, sometimes they do.

Yes 2 feet is plenty high for rays, but if its a 3ft tall tank he is looking at I don't see the down side to some extra depth and gallons. I have a 3ft tall tank, I use some rubber grabbers on the rare occasion when I need to reach the bottom.
