I saw in the local paper a custom tank with the above dimensions for a good price. I am thinking about getting it and selling my 125. I have calculated the gallons at 240.

My question is, would the 4ft width make up for the 4ft length?

I would be stocking with a silver or jardini aro (possibly both as they are together ATM just fine), a ray or two (motoro most likely), a few dats, red-tail payara, and few other misc fish. Im concerned about the aro(s) mostly.

What do you think MFK?

Me too, my dream tank is 8x4x2.

Would swimming in circles be better then swimming back and forth? Would fish in this type of tank indeed swim in circles or would they still us what space they need to turn around and still just swim back and forth?

So wait.. it's 2ft long.. 4ft high, and 4ft wide?

If thats the case.. an Aro would be a very very bad decision. Since aros reach 2ft easily.. it'd just be swimming around in circles.

If it's 4ft long.. 4ft wide, and 2ft high.. I still kinda don't think an aro would be a good idea. But you have TONS of other options for that tank. With the huge footprint, some very nice Cichlids, or a large breeding colony would be a very good idea. The reason I don't think an aro would be good in the tank is because there's alot of cases where aros reach 3ft in length. And while the tank is 4ft long (if this is the case), that still only leaves one foot of swimming space front to back, or side to side. So the fish would swim for 2/4 or 3/4 of it's body length, and have to turn.. and swim another 2/4 or 3/4 and turn.

Generally, my rule of thumb (others are always different, of course, and there's always exceptions), but the tank should be twice as long as the fishes adult size(adult being FULLY GROWN), and should be ATLEAST as wide as the fish is long.

I think for a jardini it would be a great tank. For a silver I'm undecided. Silvers like to swim no dought about that. Mine don't really swim in a strait line, more of a figure 8 through the tank. I will take quite a while for a silver to grow to 36", even 30"(just look how many are here on MFK) I think you could house a silver quite comfortably in that tank for Up to 5 years. Then ya can move him to that 8' x 4' x 2'.

its 48 long 48 wide and 24 tall. perfect ray tank IMHO. I would do a motoro, some pike cichlids and a arowana.

I would definitely go for stingrays in that tank. Not arowanas.
