5" Arowana Not Eating

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Now I feed him market prawns, Blue fin tuna, Halibut, Hikari sticks, & Red Snapper...I give him my best cuts of Sashimi...:D
Also stuff some Nls in the fish when I'm not lazy...lol

My Aro seems to be more comfortable once i put in the gravel (No more reflecting bottom). Thankyou for the advice. I put some pellets in the evening but it still didn't want to eat them. I guess it still needs to get used to the environment. Can it stay for few days without any food along with the stress?

I am currently using a sponge filter, can I use a power filter instead (1200 L/h) ? Has it got a chance of causing the fish any harm due to the water pressure? My tank is filled up only upto 7" as mentioned above.

By the way I have no access to any Hikari food sticks here. They are not for sale here... :(
Can I give it fresh fish cut into small pieces?

Dude, give him crickets...trust me in due time, all Arowana are pigs & will start eating everything & anything including pellets...;)

I read the thread and not too sure if you said you changed your waterchange routine...but I did see you filled your tank 7inches and then started to do 1inch water changes.
I would stop this. Aros love clean water and lots of it. Personally I would just fill the water to the top and cover all openings on the top of the tank to prevent him from jumping out. If you want to leave the water an inch or 2 down from the top, you could go that route too if it makes you feel comfortable...But I would certainly put more water in that tank.

Also quit these little waterchanges! I would do 50 to 70% every 4 or 5days to maximize success with your aro. Aros are super tough fish. They will be able to handle these size waterchanges easy with most peoples tap water
Use low lights..as low as possible now as you want him to get in good form..which right now, he's prob too stressed to swallow food

I would keep using just the sponge filter till he starts eating and gains some strength. Once he starts eating, you can utilize the powerfilter. But if you think the current is too strong when he's ready and he's blowing around.. you may have to downgrade powerfilters for that length of tank
But again..fill the tank, do monster waterchanges, and keep low light. He should not need the plastic plants, I don't see a need for them for his health..tank aesthetics reasons only I would say

An aro of 5 to 7inch can go a decent amount of time without of food. I wouldn't worry about him starving to death.. till you get his tank and water to his liking...crickets, superworms, small whole frozen fish like anchovies and small herring are healthy..Cut the fish up into pieces if needed. Market prawn is gd to throw in the mix too. Ordering some hikari food sticks can work as well

I tried some fresh prawns today. It ate them :). How much of prawns should i feed him at once (in grams?)? and how many times per day?

Dude, an arowana is really not a beginner fish, so if your planning on keeping him you need to upgrade soon, and also at that size, basically you feed them as much as you can.

Never heard of a tank having to be filled only 7" because the pressure will harm the fish?
Agree with jordanroda, add some floating plants, get small crickets feed a couple at a time. The fish will be stressed and can go for a long time without food, so don't worry as yet, I have never had a fish that will starve itself to death. I have found that fussy eaters always eat Hikari Food Sticks, although they may spit up other food.

I keep my water line 6 inches below normal...so my Dragon won't knock the lid off...I also bought 1/2 inch thick glass lids...
Ps. I bought 1lb (19.95 lb) of White Sea Bass Sashimi for us to eat today...:D
