Hey everyone,

I am buying a 108 gallon AGA Hagen tank shortly. Its 60 by 18 by 24.

I want to make a stand that is roughly 36 inchs high for it with the possibility of puting a 2nd tank under it in the near future.

Can I make a stand with no center support for a 5 foot tank?

I was thinking using 2by6 doubled in each corner vertically and then 2by 6 horizontaly accross for the top shelf.

Would something like this work with no center brace?

Thanks!

2x6 on edge ??? or flat ???

A vertical 2x6 frame for the tank to sit on should be fine.
The center support will really only add strength to the framing of the stand, not support for the tank.
If you look at the bottom of the tank, you will find that on most "production" tanks, the center brace is built into the bottom trim. As it is "higher" than than actual "bottom" (the trim), any center bracing of the stand will not really even touch unless you specifically make it that way.
The bottom glass on most newer tanks is inside the sides and ends, making it higher than the "bottom" as far as a stand is concerned.
My 125 sits on a vertical 2x4 frame with center "legs", but not any center tank support front to back (depth) wise.

I am sorry. I meant no center legs I guess...didn't know how to word it. Only 4 legs spread out 5 feet.

I used a DIY like that for a 29g once, but nothing as big as yours.

I have this exact same tank, my stand is made with 2x4 all around with 3 2x4 supports back-to-front with a 1/2" plywood on top screwed every 3". I also put 1/2" foam inside the frame of the tank and another 1/2" foam under all the tank to spread any load as mush as possible. I did a stress test of my stand by filling it 1/2 way, and mesured a sag of less than 1/16" without center support. Just enough sag to make my pre-cut center brace to be put back in place tight. I'd say that with 2 2x6 all around and 4x4 for legs should limit the sagging.

Go steel:)
