I have a 5ft 100g tank that I'll be converting over to a CA or CA/SA tank soon. I already have a group of Archocentrus centrarchus juveniles that I just received and have in a 20long. And a group of Archocentrus multispinosas juveniles I'm trying to acquire. Of those, I'd like to keep the whole group of multispinosas (for their ritualized but non-damaging aggression) and I hope to get a pair out of the centrarchus. Probably have a shoal of good sized tetras (colombians-ish.)

My question is, what would be a good choice for a larger "centerpiece" fish that wouldn't be too aggressive to the smaller rainbows? It'd be preferable if it's overall color would be different from the centrarchus and multispinosas. Ideas I've tossed around include a Rotkeil sev, vieja synspilum, pearsei, female jack dempsey?

Any thoughts and suggestions?

I think you'd be good with a Synspilum. I have a breeding pair of synspilum sharing a tank with a breeding pair of black Mollies and some 3/4" Hartwegi fry and a bunch of clown loaches...no aggression at all.

How big are your fish? The difference I'm seeing is that you don't really have anything in your setup they might see as a threat.

The tank is a 135. Male Syn is 9-10", female is 6-7" and there's a 7" male Dempsey in there as well. They all get along fine. The Dempsey isn't allowed near the fry but he roams the tank freely except for the small area that the fry are in. Syns are the most docile cichlids I've ever dealt with except for Angels.

I wouldn't do a syn.. jmo .. they are too iffy on aggression......in a 5 ft. tank you might want to try a severum or a braziliensis or a blood parrot as a centerpiece,, viejas other than "heterospilla" can be way too much for smaller ca's .. if you can find a heterospilla, that would be a good option ,imo,, there are other bigger fish that will work as well but most are sa's,, even my nic beat a multispinosa to death not to long ago, so ca's are just a little too much for those guys

Cool! That gives me hope then. Do you have any pictures of your setup?

I don't have any pics currently but ill try to snap some tonight after work for ya. I haven't dealt with a LOT of Syns but the several I have dealt with have all been on the pathetic side when it comes to aggression. My male has been the most aggressive Syn I've dealt with and he had to be separated from my big tank because he was getting shredded by a 5" Cuban. :-/ I have heard stories about them being a bit more aggressive when needs be but never seen it in any I've dealt with.
A large Geo would be a good fit as well!

SA is fine, though my water is more inline with CA. I won't be getting in wild caught or F1 fish, so it shouldn't be a problem. I've only ever done small and dwarf CA/SA, so the more suggestions and help for a good-sized fish, the better!
