ok i wanna try my hand at saltwater fish tanks. is a 5 gallon a good enough starter tank or what else. and what will i need to buy to make it run.

When starting your first salt water tank its always better to go bigger due to the error mistake factor.

The bigger your water volume the more room you have for error. I would try to get a bigger tank, especially if this is your first time trying salt. Smaller Nano salt tanks are very unforgiving and will sometime only discourage newbies to saltwater.

Your questions are very vague so I would simply surf MFk for more info then ask more specific questions from there....

Good luck!!!

You just want water? 5 gal, water is bout the only option or like a snail? maybe 1 live rock and some live substrate and a plant. You should post this in general salt.

Start bigger. Start with a 40-75 gallon. You will need live rock, salt, water, heater, protein skimmer, and a good thermometer. I personally would recommend running tanks with live rock and protein skimmer, rather than a filter. A good deep sand bed is also needed.

I'll move this to the saltwater section where you will get more help.

5g can't even get you a Clown fish.... I'd say ATLEAST go for 20-30 but man... Saltwater is NOT cheap and if you don't have lots of time + $$ then I'd say stick to fresh.

i moved the thread for ya!:)
Beat me to it.

The difference in saltwater is the factor of elements in the tank. Picture this, you want a specific gravity of 1.018, you add too much salt, but only a little (say 1/8th cup). This should take the SG up to 1.021-1.022, however in 55 gallons 1/8th of a cup would only change it a minute amount.

im so glad i only teach first grade. lol

5 gallon is big enough if your careful. My first reef tank was a Mini bow 2.5 then I stepped up to a Mini Bow 7. Here is a pick of the mini bow 7. Reef tanks are all about knowledge.I do agree that a larger tank is better due to a larger water volume for mistakes. Good Luck and read alot.
